Kiwi Mouth Hut
Kaweka Forest Park
Kiwi Mouth Hut sits on grassy flats / clearing beside Kiwi Creek shortly before it enters the Ngaruroro. It's a 1960's forestry style hut with 4 bunks down one side and an open fireplace on the other. As with most Kaweka huts there's a chopper pad outside and it guaranteed to be full of hunters during the Sika roar. That aside it seems to receive a handful of visitors each month. On top of the hunting, the Ngaruroa offers good fishing opportunities. A swingbridge across the river gives easy access to both valleysides.
That said, the slopes and upriver banks here are covered with dense manuka and terrible going off-track. To Rocks Ahead you're faster climbing to Back Ridge first. Down river to Camerons is not so bad, but tough all the same - easier when riverbed travel is possible. Access via Kiwi Saddle Hut involves either a steep drop down clay pans to Kiwi Stream requiring care in wet conditions, or the equally tricky 'high route' - approach with caution when wet.
