Prices Flat Hut (historic)

The historic Prices Flat Hut is better looked at than slept in. It is a beutiful slab hut, with an iron roof and chimney, located on expansive flats in the Whitcombe valley. Inside are table and 4 beds, all made of locally available hand-cut timber.

Sadly, the caulking's gone from the walls, the chimney is huge and gaping. All of which provide entry points for the numerous sandflies and mosquitos which will swarm you upon arrival.

I'm a great one for keeping character-full historic huts in preference to faceless modern purpose built tramping huts - but in this case I'd make an expection. The sandfy-free, forestry style Prices Flat Hut 500m above the historic hut is the way to go. Thanks though to DOC, for preserving this historic site for its historic value.

The track downstream to Frew Hut crosses numerous slips, and can be slow going. Upstream there is a cut track on the true right to Neave Hut. This is not shown on the map
