Kiwi Saddle Hut (Wangapeka)
Kahurangi National Park
Six bunk hut in NZFS style. Tent sites available in clearing around hut. In early January 2007 there were a large number of parakeets active around the hut. Access to the Luna Tops with numerous flowering orchids and magnificent views. Also, good access to Mt Patriach, particular if returning over the tops.

Getting there
|
From Rolling River Junction at the eastern end of the Wangapeka Track. Three hours to the swing bridge over the Wangapeka, from where the track branches off to follow Kiwi Stream. A further 3+ hours to the hut (sign says 3 hours, but many people find this an under-estimate). Round trip possible by returning over the tops and down Gibbs Track, which involves wading the Wangapeka. Both this, and Kiwi Str |
