Ball Hut

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, Te Wāhipounamu - South West New Zealand World Heritage Area

Small Hut on the moraine next to the Tasman Glacier, just south of the Ball Glacier.

The first hut was built near here in 1891, and was destroyed by avalanche in 1925. The second hut lasted 50 until consumed by fire in 1977. A road was constructed during the Great Depression, to reach the hut in 1930. In 1978, the road was damaged by storm and left unrepaired. The third hut was removed 2009 after the moraine wall eroded to within 10m of the hut. The fourth hut stands today.
