Lake McRae Hut
Molesworth Recreation Reserve
This hut dates from 1970 and was originally an NZFS four bunker. In Feb/March 2012 the hut received a major upgrade by DOC. It is now a six bunker with a dozen mattresses on site. It has an enclosed woodburner and porch, two stainless steel benches and double glazing amongst other features making it a comfortable hut. It is similar to Saxton Hut another of the East -West Route huts in the Molesworth Recreation Reserve.

Getting there
|
Trampers usually use the East - West route either coming from the Elliott Bivvy or Seymour Hut on the east (Clarence River) side or from the Molesworth Cobb Cottage campground on the west (Awatere River) side. The DOC guideline time from Seymour Hut to Lake McRae Hut is 7 - 8 hrs and from Lake McRae Hut to the Cobb Cottage campground 6 - 7hrs. I found the the DOC minimum times c.1hr+ too slow and wasn't pushing the pace. |
