The well-known Barnett Park Track leads up to a cave at the head of the valley. Unfortunately, this track is closed due to earthquake damage. However, the Eastenders Track is still open. The climb to the Summit Road and back is good exercise, and a nice alternative to some of the more well-known routes.
From Barnett Park (picnic and play areas, toilets), cross the sports fields to a stile leading upvalley. The Eastenders Track leads up the eastern side of the valley, following the same route as the closed Barnett Park Track. Passing a power transformer and pylon, the track climbs onto the hillside and sidles through gorse and scrub. After a few minutes, the track branches off left and climbs keenly over farmland. Eventually the track reaches a road leading to the nearby reservoir. Follow the road to the right to reach the Summit Road in a few minutes.
Jollies Bush is nearby. Follow the Summit Road to the left for about 500m.
