Top Okarito hut

Information may be incorrect: you are not viewing the latest version of this page. This version ID 13634 created 13 August 201313 August 2013 by glennjglennj.

This was a "squatters" hut (illegal structure) dating from the 1950's that has been used by duck shooters, fishermen & black sand goldminers over the years. DOC were making moves to remove this hut but it is now "legal" & protected for ten years through a Maintain by Community agreement between DOC and Bruce Reay. Bruce leaves the hut unlocked for public use but expects visitors to look after the place, sign the hut book and respect his personal gear in the hut.

There is more info on this hut at the Permolat/Remote Huts Westland site.
