Starts
Stopbank car park, SH6 over the Waiho River from Franz Josef Village. The track start is 20 minutes' walk from the village.

From the car park, an 800m stop bank plod leads to the foot of the knob. Good views over the broad Waiho / Tatare River flats, and a lot of pigeons in the trees. Once at the knob, an easy track spirals up through rich forest past two viewpoints.

Canavan's Knob is a sickle-shaped roche moutonée carved when the Franz Josef Glacier extended much farther out to the coast.
