Five Passes
Mount Aspiring National Park, Te Wāhipounamu - South West New Zealand World Heritage Area
- 6 – 7 days loop track
- Medium/hard
A classic trip starting and finishing at the Routeburn road.
The five passes are; Sugarloaf pass, Park pass, Cow saddle, Fiery col, Fohn saddle. There are tracks in parts of the Rock Burn and Beans Burn valleys, but the rest of this route is not marked at all and parties must be fully competent at off-track navigation.
There are no huts (apart from Rockburn hut which hardly counts) so tents are essential.
Most of the route is in Mt Aspiring national park, part of it is in Fiordland, and some of the route is through the edge of the Olivine wilderness area.
