Nikau Flat Hut
Waioeka Conservation Area
Nikau Flat hut: a 6 bunk forestry-style hut in a grassy clearing beside the Wioweka River.
This is a comfortable hut with 6 bunks, a woodburner and tank water. The river, 20m from the hut, has good swimming holes. Driftwood from the riverbed makes great firewood.
One of the highlights of the walk in is the area of bush to the north of the hut which has an almost continuous sub-storey of Nikau Palms beneath the main podocarp canopy.
This hut is part of a through tramp from Moanui Road to Redpath Road, both accessed of SH2 north of Gisborne. This is a half-tracked, half riverbed walk down the Wioweka river. In low-normal flows this is easy going, with crossings mainly knee- to waist-deep. A great summer trip with good swimming holes by all huts.
Alternatively it can be reached as an easy overnighter from the Redpath road along an easy, platformed pack-track. This track crosses private land and permission may be required for dogs/firearms.
