Piripiri Hut
Ruahine Forest Park
Piripiri Hut is a comfortably spacious 2-bunk hut in the western Ruahine Ranges. Water is from a small creek 20m away. The hut has an open fire, which unfortunately leaves the floor soaken in a downpour. Smaller chimney required?
The hut sits in thick bush on the ridge between two branches of Piripiri creek - about 80m above the creek. The Topo50 map (edition 2009) shows the hut lower on the ridge than its actual position. The hut is reached by following the main (centre) branch of the creek until a slip is reached sporting a large orange DOC triangle below the hut position. Scramble up the slip and pick up a marked track at the top leading to the hut.
Access to the hut up Piripiri creek is very tough going if there's much water inthe river - the valley is very tight and there's numerous small waterfalls. After rain the entire valleyfloor is river.
Access down from the Ngamoko range is possible after rain but is very steep.
