Otutu Hut
Kaweka Forest Park
Otutu hut: a lovely 6-bunk hut on the last ridge of crown land before the tussock plateaus that run down to Ngamatea Stn. The hut is sheltered on 3 sides by beech forest, the ridge to the north running though beech up into that red-orange-yellow knee-high scrub so typical of the Kawekas. The knob to the south is low tussock, with great views from the summit.
A weel worthwhile hut to visit - but most popular with fly-in / fly-out hunters.

Track runs down the ridge from the Manson / Ngaawapurua / Otutu track junction to the north. Manson & Otutu tracks cut/maintained. Track from Ngaawapurua is private and not maintained. Swingbridge at Ngaawapurua has been removed - crossing ok in normal conditions. Another track heads south from the hut along the escarpment before dropping to Manson Strm and climbing the far-side to the Manson high-point. Track is cut and maintained (2012). Far shorter than ridgeline but steep. |
