Poet hut April 2011

Poet hut April 2011

This hut is a 1950's NZFS cullers hut located on the TR of the Mungo River a tributary of the Hokitika River. Easiest walking access to it is via the Toaroha valley and Toaroha Saddle. There is a good marked track/route the whole way. It can be reached in a day from the road end but most parties take one and a half or two days to get there.

I recently revisited this hut for the first time since the mid 1970's and it is much the same as I remembered it. However it appears that the deep shelving that served as a storage area for cullers food has been reduced in size to provide more floor space & that the door step arrangement has been improved upon. The window has been enlarged. The open fire is still there along with a camp oven. We didn't stay there this trip but I'm sure it would still be nice and cosy with the fire going.
