Spoon hut

Spoon hut

Another view of the hut taken March 2011.

There are no tracks to this hut. You can travel overland from the Hope or Cascade Rivers or walk up from the coast. We used the latter route following instructions given by Gorge River local Robert Long (Beansprout) whom we'd shared the Big Bay hut with 3 years ago. From the mouth of the Spoon walk up the river to the confluence of the two branches (c. 2hrs) then take the TR branch until near the saddle back to the TL branch. Walk thru the saddle & drop to the hut which is only 15m from the rivers edge. If you don't see the hut after hitting the river after dropping from the saddle head down stream & you'll pick it up.

This hut can be reached from the locked gate at the Cascade road end in a day and a half tho it would be possible to reach it in a big day in summer conditions. We took 4hrs to reach the private hut at Hope River just inland from Barn Bay. From there to the Spoon mouth was 3.5 hrs & on to the hut 3.0 hrs
