Nolans hut

Information may be incorrect: you are not viewing the latest version of this page. This version ID 9793 created 1 March 20111 March 2011 by glennjglennj.

This hut is situated on the TL of the Perth River not far above Hughes Creek. It is an older style four bunker with an open fire. Part of the floor is made of adze dressed timber.

This hut is mainly used by hunters. Deer, chamois, tahr & wild cattle are to be found in the vicinity. There are a lot of names & various other graffiti around the hut. Unusually for a hut more than a couple of hours from the road the hut book has a few 1080 rants and barely literate sexual innuendo from young wannabee hunters?

We spotted two blue ducks on the Perth River not far above the hut.

Getting there
Getting there
Up the TL of the Whataroa to the swing bridge. Cross to the other side & proceed a short distance to the track junction. Take the Perth River track. It crosses a large boggy terrace containing some good podocarps before dropping to the river. It is mainly boulder hopping up the TL of the Perth to the hut from the top of the gorge where the track emerges. [it takes 3.5 - 4.5hrs though the DOC sign times add up to more than this]
