Kiwi Flat hut

This hut is adjacent Kiwi Flat on the Waitaha River. It is on a low terrace on the the TR of the Whirling Water tributary of the Waitaha River about 500m above the confluence.

The Morgan Gorge, the ultimate challenge for kayakers, starts at the bottom of Kiwi Flat. This gorge is wild & looks like a black slot in the rocks from a distance. There are plans for a "run of river" hydro power scheme afoot which would take water from the Morgan Gorge.

Getting there
Getting there
From the end of Allen Rd on the TL bank of the Waitaha River park up near the locked gate & follow a vehicle track through farmland. Cut SE to the river on a boggy dozer track at the end of the paddocks rather than taking the track shown on the map. Walk up the Waitaha River edge then after Douglas Creek you will pick up markers and bits of track that take you to Kiwi Flat. You can see where the hut will be about 1km ahead once you emerge on the flat. *2012 Track up TR to Morgan Gorge bridge.
