Pinnacle biv (aka Crinkle Top biv)
An old late 1950's NZFS cullers biv situated up in the tussock near the top of Mt Crinkle Top. This is on the TL of the Kokatahi valley and the NE flanks of the Toaroha range.
DOC replaced this biv in 2011 with what was Top Crawford biv. [There is now a hut 300m from where Top Crawford biv used to be] The replacement biv is the same design as the original and much the same colour scheme. The new one is 12 paces NE of where the old one was. The new biv has two sleeping benches against the back & one side wall and a low bench & narrow table against the other wall. There are no mattresses but there are a couple of old lilos there. The water supply is from a nearby tarn.

Getting there

Usual access is via a track that leaves the TL Kokatahi track just before Boo Boo hut. It starts from a small clearing on the TL of a creek. This tops track is in surprisingly good condition despite lack of recent maintenance. The biv can be reached comfortably in 3hrs from Boo Boo or a day from the road end. Alternatively stop a night at Boo Boo hut on the way in. (about 4hrs) Pinnacle Biv can also be accessed via the Toaroha Range from a host of other huts and bivs. |
