Pararaki Hut
Aorangi Forest Park
Pararaki Hut (6 bunk, mattresses, stream water, open fire, firewood available) is a valley floor hut in the middle of the Haurangi Forest park. Probably the most remote hut in the park, it sits in a clearing on a river terrace 50m upriver from where the Kawakawa - Pararaki track hits the Pararaki Stream. It's partially hidden behind a bank, but you should still spot it: being painted bright orange - the colour huts are supposed to be!
Most people visit when walking the Pinnacles to Cape Palliser track, or loop walks between adjacent catchments off the Cape Palliser Road on the east coast. However, a good ridgeline route also exists from the summit north of the hut to the 4wd Sutherlands Road, providing access to Sutherlands Hut. The start of the route is marked with pink cruise tape where the track turns to descend to Washpool. It's a little scrubby and marked only with tape for the 1st km, but becomes well traveled and marked with triangles beyond the 1st peak.
