The Kai Iwi Lakes are a series of dune lakes on farmland north of Dargaville. A camping ground is located amongst pine forest at Lake Taharoa, and it is an excellent spot to stop for a swim travelling north on a hot day. The lakes are shallow and warm, with beautiful white sand.

From the camping ground, this track leads around the eastern coast of Lake Taharoa, across the road and out over farmland to the coast. From here, you can proceed up the beach (northwest) to Aranga Beach and the foot of Maunganui Bluff. Another track leads up onto the bluff itself (2 hours return from beach to summit).

Access this track from various points:

  • Lake Taharoa camping ground -- skirt around Lake Taharoa from here.
  • Kai Iwi Lakes Road just before Lake Waikere -- 30 minutes across farmland to the beach.
  • Aranga Beach via Aranga Coast Road -- the foot of Maunganui Bluff.
