Rakiura National Park

New Zealand's newest and southernmost park, on Stewart Island.

Bungaree Hut • By ledge.

Rakiura National Park was established in 2002, and occupies 85% of Stewart Island. The island itself is accessed by flight from Invercargill or by a one-hour ferry from Bluff. The township of Oban offers accommodation, groceries, and essentials. There are roads near the township, and most points are within walking distance.

Mason Bay • By lewshaw.

A number of short walks radiate out from Oban, and nearby Ulva Island is a popular visit for birdwatchers (transport may be arranged on the island). The three day Rakiura Track is a popular tramping track and one of DOC's "Great Walks," but the long and muddy North West Circuit is the classic Stewart Island tramp.
