On our 14 day tramp on Stewart Island,we saw kiwi numerous times during daylight.Because of a lot of dull, overcast days and historic lack of predators, kiwi commonly forage in sight of trampers.Anyone spending time away from the town(Oban),will be quite unlucky NOT to see kiwi. They are unique in the bird world in having their nostrills at the tip of their beaks-all the better to sniff out a tasty morsel when they plunge their beak into the soil.
