Makarora Hut

Makarora Hut (4 bunks, matresses, stove, firewood available, river water) is a simple but comfortable forestry-style hut on flats in the Upper Makarora.

The hut is reached by a well-maintained sidle track from the Haast Pass road, which climbs moderately steeply. As such it malkes a good weekend tramp for fit people of most experience levels.

For the more experienced, easy valley floor routes cotinue upriver, allowing the exploration to glaciers at the head of the Makarora. A low, sub-alpine pass heads east to Scrubby Flat creek and the Hunter from 1.5km upriver of the hut. This is an unmarked route, and allows a variety of round-trip and through tramps.
