Huxley Forks Hut
Ruataniwha Conservation Park
Huxley Forks Hut (6-bunk, matresses, stove, firewood, tank/creek water) is an old, homely forestry-style hut at the forks of the north and south branch of the Huxley. The hut is located on river terraces, looking over tussock flats.
The hut is a common first / last night for those crossing the Alps by the Broderick pass from the Huxley into the Landsborough. Alpine routes lead over several other passes:
- Elcho col (Hopkins-Landsborough)
- (G38 458759) Huxley-Ahuriri
- (G38 460752) Sth Huxley-Sth Temple
- (G38 476662) Ahuriri-Sth Temple
Alpine loop tramps are thus possible: Huxley-Landsborough-Hopkins, Huxley-Sth Temple and Huxley-Ahuriri-Sth Temple.
Relatively easy valley tramps on marked tracks stick close to the valley floor from the Hopkins to Brodrick Hut. An unmaintained track leads up the South Branch of the Huxley passing Sth Huxley Biv.
The area is also popular with hunters with red deer, chamois and thar all present.

Lake Ohau Roadend(Huxley Lodge): Forks->Monument Hut(8km, 2-4hrs, sidle track/faster riverbed route) -> roadend(8km, 4WD track) Landsborough (Fraser Hut): Forks->Brodrick Hut(5km, cut track)->Fraser Hut(7km, marked alpine route via Broderick Pass). From Fraser, 2-3 days down Landsborough to Haast Pass, river crossings Ahuriri Base: Unmarked route to Top Hut then 4WD track. Forks->Sth Huxley Biv(5km)->Top Hut(12km)->Hagens Hut(4km)->Shamrock Hut(6km)->roadend(8km) |
