Grough Hut
Ruataniwha Conservation Park
The innacurately named Grough Hut (2 beds, 1 matress, no fire, water distant) is actually a very basic bivvy on the bushedge above the Dobson. The fireplace has been removed (according to a 2005 entry in the hut book, 'Gus' the local DOC recreation boss 'has a plan' for its remains - we wait with baited, shivering breath).
The main reason to be here is to hunt red deer, abundant in the beech faces in the mid-Dobson. The hut could be a stopping-point for those heading up- or down-river, but the comfortable Kennedy Hut an hour and a half upstream is reccomended.
Huts downstream are on Glen Lyon Station land: Station Hut is private, and ownership of Le Crens Hut is disputed between DOC who allowed it to fall into a derelict state, and Glen Lyon Station who renovated it. You may wish to book with Glen Lyon Station if staying there.
