Kennedy Hut
Ruataniwha Conservation Park
Kennedy Hut / Kennedy Memorial Hut (6 bunks, matresses, stove, tank & stream water) is a spacious 6 bed hut in the mid-Dobson. It is located in a small copse of mature beech tree on terraces to the west of the valley. The hut provides good views up to glaciers at the head of the Dobson, but is sheltered from the worst of the winds by the trees. It is by far the most comfortable hut in the valley, and has the warmest location.
The hut is popular with hunters, after red deer in the beech-covered valleysides, so expect company. Adventurous trampers have the option of continuing up the valley and over one of three saddles: Jamieson saddle into the Tasman, Tragedy Col into the Hopkins or Barron Saddle onto the Mueller Glacier.
Downriver, Station Hut is private (Glen Lyon Station), and ownership of Le Crens Hut is contested between DOC who allowed it to fall into disrepair and Glen Lyon Station who renovated it - it may be advisable to book to avoid conflict.
