Growler Hut
Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park
Growler Hut (8 bunks, stove, stream water) is a private hut on the south side of the Havelock River valley, just upriver of the Growler Stream. It's a comfortable, well maintained hut with a good stove, but limited firewood in the locality (for those booking the facility, wood is provided in the woodshed by the owners).
The hut may be booked through Laurie Prouting in Montalto, Mayfield, or Malcolm Prouting at Mesopotamia Station (both listed in white pages).
On the south side of the river, DOC's Mistake Flats hut (9km upriver) provides alternative public accomodation, as does Curtis Memorial Hut on the north bank.
The hut is popular with hunters, with Carneys Creek, Camp Creek and The Growler thick with thar. The Growler and Camp Creek both give good alpine routes into the McCauley/Godley to the south-west. The hut is also a handy resting place for those who, like me, are soaked to the skin after crossing the Havelock from the Clyde valley.
