Browning Range Bivouac

'If you're just about buggered, you're just about at Browning Biv'. The sign below the biv says it all: it's a tough steep climb up the track from the Styx Valley to this lovely alpine bivouac.

The Browning Range Bivouac (2 bunks, matresses, tank water) is a well cared-for alpine bivouac on the bushline overlooking the Styx Valley. The biv is well equiped, but as with most alpine biv's ahs no fire.

The biv is the half-way point from the valley floor to the Lathrop Saddle which cuts into the upper Crawford Valley. On a fine day this beautiful, tarn-studded hanging valley is a worthwhile day-trip from the biv.

It is also possible to continue over Lathrop Saddle into the Crawford and down the river to the Kokatahi roadend - which is only 3km along the road from the Styx roadend, thus making a good 2-3 day loop walk. Be warned though, the Crawford / Kokatahi valley tracks are getting overgrown in places.
