A good summer camping spot at Lake Thompson in the Nelson Lakes. This lake is at 1700m, at the head of the Waiau valley, and 50m below Thompson Pass into the upper D'Urville Valley.

2-4 hours from Caroline Creek Hut up the Waiau valley

4-9 hours walk from the Blue Lakes Hut via Waiau Pass

2-4 hours from Upper D'Urville Hut via Thompson Pass

6-14 hours from East Matakitaki Hut via Thompson Pass and David Saddle. 2-4 hours can apparently be knoked off this time by crossing the unmarked Upper D'Urville Pass (M30 783968) reached by sidling south from Thompson Pass summit, cutting west directly into the head of the Matakitaki.
