Red Hills Hut
Mount Richmond Forest Park
The Red Hills Hut sits on the saddle between the Motueka (right branch) and the Wairau, and at the base of the Red Hills Ridge. Sadly the hut has been badly treated (grafiti abounds) and allowed to fall into a rough state. The fireplace has been removed, and the beds / matresses are so decrepid / bowed that sleeping on the floor presented a much more comfortable option. However, the hut is weather-tight, and provides a convenient and useful stopping place, which would be sorely missed were it to fall further into disrepair.

Porters (Creek) Hut: 10.5km. Track. Top Wairoa Hut: 21km, 8-14hrs. Easy ridge route to pt1749. Alpine route (hard scramble) from pt1749 over Red Hill. 2 small peaks nth of pt1770 before Red Hill are tricky, but can be avoided by dropping into hanging valley on west of ridge. |
