Army Hut
Although basic by DOC's categories, this is a comfortable, well appointed 4-bed hut, maintained by local volunteers from Te Anau.
The hut is frequently visited by 4WDers, hunters, and mountain bikers and has unfortunately been subjected to some abuse. It is still in reasonable nick though and keeps you dry in the storm.
The hut is located in the Snowdon Forest, in the mid reaches of the Upukerora River. Downstream large gravel river flats make for good travel, whilst upstream the valley closes in after about 3km of open flats. A good route leads to the Summit of Mt Snowdon via the slips north of the hut. Tracks to Boyd Creek and Mavora Lakes via Kiwi Burn Hut are poorly maintained, and better regarded as 'routes'. The track south to the Whitestone valley is wrongly marked on map D42: the track/route follows the plateau on the true right of the creek from the Upukerora to the saddle, and is easy going compared to scrub in the valley floor where the track is shown on the ma
