Old Man Hut
Mount Richmond Forest Park
Old Man Hut (sleeps 6, wood-burning stove, firewood available, tank & stream water) sits in a large grassy clearing between Old Man peak and Mt Rintoul. The hut is down a side-track, about 1km (300 vertical meters) off the ridgeline track between these two peaks, so be prepared for a bit of a climb in the morning if you're heading that way.
There's been a family of Weka living iunder the hut for some years now. They make entertaining watching, but don't leave anything lying around!
Bush tracks lead to The Growler and Lake Chalice, but for many the reason for being here is the 'alpine route' which passes this hut. on the way from Slaty Hut to Rintoul. The tops of Old Man offer great views over Nelson / Motueka. Tank water is also available on the summit of Old Man: a great relief for those walking the ridge from Richmond Saddle as this is the first water since the hut.
