Crombie Biv

A three bunk biodiversity hut located in a tiny clearing on the west bank of Crombie Stream in the Waitutu district of Fiordland. The hut was installed for workers running the intensive trapping regime in the area, but is open and available for public use the rest of the year (typically occupied by staff 4 weeks a year).

Marked traplines run north and south from the hut, connecting to the base of spurs to hightpointd 2w1 (niorth) and 238 (south). These ridgelines give access to the Teal Bay - Poteriteri track to the niorth and the Wairaurahiri swingbridge of the SOuth Coast Track to the south.

This is an amazing spot for birdlife, owing to the intensive predator control and the now-rare lowland temperate rainforest habitat. Kaka especially are abundant and mohua also present.

An older derelict ironclad structure sits behind the new hut, and disused deer-pens nearby indicate that venison life-capture may have been to original use.
