Trotters Gorge Loop Track
- 1 hr 40 min – 2 hr 20 min return by the same track
- Easy
Trotters Gorge is a sceinic reserve that is found slightly south of Moeraki Otago. It has a selection of tracks and a campsight. The loop track was finished in 2007 and is well worth doing if you are passing by.
Dogs OK
It follows the creek up to a couple of limestone caves and then climbs past interesting limestone formations till it crests a ridge. At this point the track splits one side heading up the ridge along the limestone slabs to the top, where expansive views can be enjoyed. After which return to the split and continue down the ridge.
The track descends very quickly through manuka forest past more stunning limestone formations till reaching the valley floor. This part of the track can be a bit boggy as it meanders along the creek bed through broadleaf forest to rejoin the track 200 meters down from the caves return via the same track.
The DOC campsight here fills very quickly over the summer months it has a toilet and water from the creek can be boiled.
