Castle Camp Shelter
Castle Camp Shelter (tank water) must be the only greenhouse dedicated as a backcountry shelter. It is made of PVC sheets strectched over a timber frame and strengthened with chicken wire. On a warm spring day, it served as an effective sauna - on a cold winter's night the temperature may no be so high!
No beds are provided, and the floor is earth / grass. There is sleeping space for 12+ people, but bring your own sleeping mats - or maybe a tent! In seriousness, this is an emergency shelter providing a handy escape from bad weather on the main Kaweka Ridge. The provision of tank water from the roof also makes this a handy spot for tent-camping: this is the only water north of Kiwi Saddle for those heading over the Kaweka summits. Firewood is available in the locality, but no fireplace provided.
