Diane's Hut
Ruahine Forest Park
Diane's Hut (sleeps 6, wood burning stove, firewood available in locality, stream water) is located on a stony bench just above the Koau Stream. The valley sides are canyonous, and the hut at first glance makes for a cold, dark spot to spend the night. However, first impressions are deceiving: the hut recieves morning light, and the best wood-burning stove I have yet to meet more than does the job of heating the place. Water is available from the main river about 50m from the hut, where a deep pool also provides good batheing.
The hut was built in the 1970's as a memorial to its namesake, Diane - a keen hunter who died in her late teens. The story of her life and of the hut is presented in the hut, and makes for an interesting read.
