Upper Makaroro Hut (sleeps 4, wood-burning stove), lies adjacent to the Makaroro River in its upper reaches. It is a simple, but comfortable hut. Water supply is from the river, on which Blue Ducks can be seen.

The trip down the river to Barlow Hut and the Makaroro Roadend involves frequent travel in the river deep pools which require swimming or rock-climbing at even low levels: a nice walk for a hot day but not recommended in the cold! Tracks also lead to the top of the east and west ridges of the from the hut.
