Waikamaka Hut
Ruahine Forest Park
Waikamaka Hut (8 beds, wood-burning stove, firewood available in locality, river water 100m distant) sits in the headwaters of the Waikamaka Stream, 1.5km below the Waipawa Saddle, and below the pyramidical Te Atuaparapara Peak (1687m).
An old tramping club hut, it has a good deal of charater - who carried the lightbulb and switch (though nothing connecting the two) up there and installed them? The only downside is descending 100m to the river for water.
An old, dilapedated hut lies on the true right on the river flats - the current hut sits out of sight from the river, on a river terrace between the two rivers. It is marked by a signpost and large cairn.
