Waikamaka Hut
Ruahine Forest Park
Waikamaka Hut sits in the headwaters of the Waikamaka Stream, 1.5km below the Waipawa Saddle, and below the pyramidical Te Atuaparapara Peak (1687m).
An old tramping club hut, it has a good deal of character (who carried the light bulb and switch, though nothing connecting the two, up there and installed them?). The only downside is descending 100m to the river for water.
the hut sits out of sight from the river, on a river terrace between the two rivers at the forks. An old, dilapidated NZFS biv lies on the true right on the river flats.
The hut has a wood-burning stove with firewood available in locality, and water available from the river water 100m distant.
