    Five Passes

    lewshaw
    lewshawlewshaw • 23 January 2016 20:26

Five of us just circuited the Five Passes; Sugarloaf,Park,Cow,Fiery & Fohn.Pretty well marked for the initial & last half day and cairned with a rude track for the rest.We tented but plenty of bivvy rocks sprinkled around if they float your boat.We had mostly overcast & rain but it cleared on Fiery & Fohn.Didn`t get up Sunset Peak(clag) for views down over the Olivine Flats,so will repeat the dose with some change of route. We had the Dart jetboat booked for day 6,but emerged from the bush & the Beans /Dart confluence late on the 5th afternoon. We fluked the boat & after 20 minutes, arrived at Glenorchy to showers, bevvies & blue cod. This classic probably doesn`t have the `explorer` allure of a few decades ago,but heavy weather will keep you honest.Bit of route finding & a wide range of terrain;scree, rock, snowgrass, talus, river valley & high lakes. The varied colour rocks will appeal too.Enough grunt on the climbs & knee jerky stuff on the steep decents to keep your pack lightish.
