As it has no outlet, the lake (which is really a pond) has concentrated salts from surrounding soils, and is presently half the salinity of seawater. A few coastal plants grow around the lake although these are not obvious to non-botanists.
The most interesting aspect of the area is the array of schist tors scattered thickly across the landscape. These fascinating shapes are remnants from erosion, the harder pieces of schist resisting weathering. The circuit is a welcome opportunity to walk amongst the tors.
