The Waihunga forms part of the east-west route through the Raukumaras. For the most part it's an open valley with broad shingle / rocky flats. Many crossings are necessary to traverse the river from the headwaters to Te Kahika Hut site, but all should be possible under normal flows.

Note that both Mangatutara Hut and Te Kahika Hut have gone, and only riverbeds remain where they once stood.
