Derelict miners hut Lyell Creek May 2014

Derelict miners hut Lyell Creek May 2014

This photo shows a surviving historic miners hut near the confluence of Lyell Creek and Irishmans Creek. (It is on the TR of both and appears on the 2008 Topo 50 map) The hut is now in very poor condition with the door not latching properly and the floor rotten. Goats and possums have been living in the hut.

The easiest way to get to the hut is to cross Irishmans Creek from the Alpine Battery site which there is a DOC track to from "The Old Ghost Road" track. You can also walk up the old machine track from the Croesus Battery but the section between the Croesus and Alpine Batteries is no longer maintained by DOC and the markers have been removed. One blown out creek and a large steep scree slip make this route unsuitable for the less experienced. I made a round trip of a visit to the hut going in via the Croesus Battery & out via the Alpine Battery and Old Ghost Road. This loop took 3hrs from the Lyell campground and included a short while poking around the historic sights.
