A tidy 8-bunk hut in the mid-reaches of the Pohongina Valley. Tracks climb both ranges to the east and west, but up and down the Pohongina you'll be getting your feet wet - and probably much more. The river up to Top Gorge, and down to Ngamoko is navigable in low-moderate flows. Both directions have short 200m gorges sections which require sidling: 1.5km below Leon Kinvig Hut, and 1.5km below Top Gorge Hut.

This is the clearest section of the Pohongina: large grassy slips dominate, becoming beech forest as you head upriver and changing to mature podocarp bush downriver.
