Roger's hut to Pakiaka hut

Whirinaki to Urewera down Te Wairoa stream..unmarked the river is the way. Upper reach campsite Ngutukaka stream on true right. Succession of gorges with crucial point around 400 metres above confluence with Whangatawhia stream..shute rapid only way with dangerous trap against facing wall..roping from above very advisable to escape eddy at least 30 metres. Jump immediately following waterfall and then reasonable river travel to Pakiaka with due care. Trip done in February with low water would not recommend in any other condition but very satisfying expedition in remote beautiful unforgiving environment. Hot springs a trickle off cliff face but apparently source above is substantial..we were too bent on distant hut to climb!! Again stress to anybody doing this to take extreme care at rapid...deceptively dangerous two of us were lucky not to drown!!
