Forbes Hut (Hunter)

Hāwea Conservation Park

Forbes Hut is a typical 4 (6?) bunk forestry hut in the Hunter. The hut sits on the last of the broad, grassy river flats before The Forks above which both the East and West Hunter become narrow and gorged and flats become intermittent.

Valleysides are stock-standard Otago beech forest - open and good travel. The hut has an airstrip and gets a good amount of use by fly-in-fly-out hunters, especially during the roar. Otherwise the Hunter gets little use due to access difficulties (see below). However the good valley travel surrounding ranges and numerous passes make for some excellent and challenging trips.

Upriver huts shown on some maps have been removed. Downriver Fergusson Hut is DOC and Scrubby Hut is private but generally available.
