A six bunker NZFS hut built in 1974. It is on the TL of the Wanganui River just above the confluence with the Lambert River. This hut replaced a slab hut and kept the name of its forebear. Hunters are still the main users of the hut but a steady trickle of trampers use the hut as well.

It's a reasonably steady half day walk to reach this hut from the Wanganui roadend. It involves a fair bit of boulder hopping, flats walking & a cage crossing of the Wanganui River. (unless river flows are low & fording is possible)

Upstream of Hunters hut the Wanganui starts to get gnarly and is a place for the experienced.
