North Mangahao Biv

Tararua Forest Park

North Mangahao Biv

A tidy dog-box biv in the northern Tararuas. Accessed from wither Kopikopiko road on the east or Scotts Road on the west. Either is accessed along cut but unmarked tracks through bush and scrub.

Hut book mentions a couple of other unmarked bivs/huts in the area: Punga Hut (Miro Valley Hut) and 'NS Biv'. I can confirm the existence of the former, but have yet to find the latter.

The ridge above the hut is solid leatherleaf - not much fun - but the east face is easy to sidle. A sidle track also exists (somewhere) across the west face. The Miro river (the valley to the north of the hut) is tight with waterfalls and deep pools. I've traveled up it along the river, but don't recommend that direction due to 3 waterfalls which require some tough scrambling to pass. A number of parties (mainly led by Tony Gates) run canyoning trips down it - which would be much more fun - the falls all have good deep pools below them.
