Lake Matiri Hut

Kahurangi National Park

A tidy little hut nestled in forest, with views across Lake Matiri, and a picnic table where you can admire them. River flats just north of the hut could be suitable for camping, although the sandflies are somewhat aggressive. Constant drone of wasps is a big put-off, as they are constantly trying to get into the hut.

20-minute walk north to river flats is worth it. Deep swim in river mouth a real bonus!

Getting there
Getting there
South: from the Matiri West Bank Road end, along a 4WD track to ford the West Branch. From here the gradient is easy, but path rocky and boggy in places. Not marked. Eventually ascends a spur beside the natural dam which creates the lake. North: from the Thousand Acres Plateau or from McConchies Hut farther up the Matiri River.
