Burn Hut

Cool wee hut sitting on the tops a few hours from Mangahoa Dam 2, near Shannon. Great view. Walk in takes 2-3 hours. Can do the round trip to Dam no 1 (a bit longer, probably 5-6 hours).

The ridgeline route south to Herepai / Dundas was roughly recut in 2013, and should be possible again for the next few years. Hopefully maintenance will be ongoing,

Getting there

Access to the hut is by road off SH57 at Shannon. Follow the road signs to the Mangaore Power Village for approximately 5 km and past the Mangahao Hydro Electric Power Station. A very winding metal road will take you past the smaller Tokomaru No 3 reservoir and the Mangahao No 2 reservoir where the track starts |
