Kokatahi Bivouac (removed)
Hut removed 2008.
Kokatahi Bivouac (dilapidated) was once a typical 2-bed apline bivouac, located on a grassy face above the upper Kokatahi River, just above the confluence with the creek draining from Zit Saddle. However, the bivouac is now in a sad state of disrepair: the floor has rotted out, and it has fallen off it's piles, and is tilted sideways at an angle of 15 degrees. Not much - you say? Well you try sleeping on the 'uphill' bed without rolling off.
In reality, this bivouac still serves as an emergency shelter - and can sleep one, at a push, on the narrow cooking-bench on the downhill side (I actually got a good night's sleep - but I was very tired). There is no flat ground anywhere nearby to pitch a tent - so plan on staying at the Top Kokatahi Hut 3km downstream, until this bivouac is rescued from the brink.
It's a lovely spot in the upper Kokatahi Valley. It's handly for an early crossing of Zit Saddle, or climb to Mt Chamberlain.
Kokatahi Roadend (J33 577110): Cut track / rough riverbed route. Via Top Kokatahi Hut (3km, 1.5-2.5 hrs), Crawford Junction Hut (8km, 4-8hrs), Booboo Hut (15km)
Toaroha Roadend (J33 577094): 17km - Alpine route from biv over Zit Saddle then cut track. Via Adventure Biv (4.5km) and Cedar Flats Hut (7km)
A good ridgeline leads south from Zit Saddle over Mt Chamberlain and Mt Bannatyne to Toaroha Biv. From this ridge you can drop to Mungo Hut, Poets Hut or Top Toaroha Hut
